Stress at workStress is something that we cannot avoid. It strikes almost everywhere whether you are at home or at work. Stress can become debilitating as it has the potential of making people less productive that could lead to job instability. Stress is in our DNA. It is something that nature has placed there in order to keep us on our toes. The problem is that some people can hardly turn it off when we no longer need it. The good thing about stress is that we have found ways to cope or at least reduce its effects. Whenever stress is attacking us we can get some help with these few simple tips that can help you cope better.

Beating stress is easy

The workplace is not immune to stress. Each day millions of workers are subjected to stressful environment. This could lead to lowered performance which can impact the productivity. In fact, stress-related illness is one of the major health reasons that employees use. Avoid knee-jerk situations that can lead to negative situations that can help make the stress worse. It is best to have a constant communication with your peers and superiors and to have a healthy working environment that everyone pitches in and play their roles to the hilt in order to ensure that the common goals are achieved.

Recognize the signs

When you feel irritable or depressed and not that enthusiastic to go to work then you may be under a lot of stress. This is a very important warning sign. Anxiety symptoms like fatigue even if you had a lot of time to rest and trouble focusing or concentrating with the task at hand could lead you to bigger problems. If this happens the best thing to do is to stop and put yourself in a situation that you can get some relaxation. Try to meditate and to think about a happy place. This will ease the tension and bring down the stress that you are feeling. Smile and you will feel a bit happier even if you are not.

Take care of yourself

When you are under too much stress you need to start taking care of your body or it will breakdown eventually. Try doing some exercise because the movement can help melt the stress hormones that are circulating in the body at the moment of stress. You can do simple exercises right at your desk like some simple push-ups, leg raises and body raises. You can also do some stationary walk while you answer emails or phone calls. Do anything that can provide some motion as little exercise is better than no exercise at all.

Skip alcohol and nicotine

Smoking and drinking alcohol would only make matters worse for you if you are taking a lot of stress at work. Drinking to shake off the workplace stress will do more damage than benefit as it can lead to addiction and further health consequences. Alcoholism can damage the kidneys and the liver while nicotine can start a lot of cancers and even cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which can eventually lead to death.

Get lots of rest

People that are under stress can lose sleep. Not getting enough sleep will make stress and anxiety worse. While it is a chicken and egg thing—the bottom line is that you need to get some sleep. There are natural ways of inducing sleep aside from the medications that the doctor may prescribe. Natural ways to have a good sleep are always better because they are free from nasty side effects and will not cause any harm to the body. Eat more foods that are rich in magnesium and melatonin as it can help the body sleep better.

Eat the right foods

It is easy to eat out when you are at work. You don’t need to prepare food and just eat what is available. But the thing is that your stress becomes worse because of the food that you eat. Make some sacrifice by preparing the food that you will eat at work. Eat foods that are rich in tryptophan as it can help the brain produce serotonin which is the chemical that can melt stress and anxiety away.

Organization and careful planning are the best ways to avoid being overwhelmed and experience undue stress. If you can take steps to make your job easier and better managed do it. It is easy to get out of stressful situation if you prepare for it.
